Data Science Solutions for Social Good

Mehdi Jamei

Bayes Impact is a nonprofit building open source software products leveraging data to improve social outcomes around the world. Mehdi Jamei, Bayes Impact’s U.S. Executive Director, points out two issues with government-provided public services: they are often technologically out of date and often designed without the public interest in mind. He says, “By building the future of government into a platform, we can enable and empower citizens to build independent public services, and help each other at scale.” For their efforts to improve the global “future of work” and create new job opportunities, Bayes Impact was chosen as a grantee by Google and selected as a 2016 GLG Social Impact Fellow organization. Jamei sits down with GLG to discuss the incentive structure for social good, leveraging data to improve social outcomes, and his hopes for Bayes Impact in the future.

Mehdi Jamei is the U.S. Executive Director of Bayes Impact. He joined Bayes Impact as a data scientist and technical lead in 2015, and has worked on a verity of data-driven social impact solutions, including a military skills translator for veterans looking for civilian jobs with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a predictive model for risk of hospital readmission with Sutter Health, claims analysis pipeline for the Quality Payment Program (QPP) with Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Jamei has a PhD in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley.
